Rob Bastiaans

Associate Professor

Eindhoven University of Technology

Netherlands

Biography

Rob Bastiaans is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), group Power & Flow. In this capacity, he is also Chairman of the Dutch Section of the Combustion Institute and Chairman of the Dutch section of IFRF (International Flame Research Foundation. Rob’s areas of expertise include fluid mechanics modeling, experiments and simulation, including turbulence and combustion specifically. His former research included conversion of biomass but he is still interested especially for decentralized cases that integrate synthesis of fuel gases as well as use of these. Current researches comprise the reduction of computational resources, with respect to efficiency as well as accuracy for both kinetics (FGM) and aerodynamics (LES), and their combination. Everything for carbon free fuels, in particular ammonia and hydrogen, looking at preferential diffusion aspects and NOx emissions. A typical application area is on the combustion of these fuels in gas turbines but mostly starting with validation of all intermediate steps subsequently starting at turbulent combustion DNS’s with detailed chemistry of canonical cases. Rob is also a regular visiting professor (3-4 months each) at the Center for Turbulence Research at Stanford University (2004, 2007, 2012, 2023).
